"The school of the country" - through the Reformation, which was intertwined with the life of Debrecen for about 4 and a half centuries, the Reformed College, operating since 1538, played an extremely important role in the life of the country.
The glorifying name is no accident, since Debrecen has gifted the country with a whole range of educated and talented young people from the school´s halls. Professors who visited German and English universities were the first in Hungary to provide a place in the curriculum for the subjects of geography, history, medicine and natural sciences. Its language of instruction was Latin until the 19th century, which ensured the connection with the scientific life of Europe.
After the demolition of the old college building, the new college was built between 1803 and 1816 based on the plans of Mihály Péchy. It owes its irregular quadrangular shape to the Budapest architect Lajos Vasél, whose plans were used to connect the two buildings between 1870 and 1874.
