Its building was built in the early 1860s, based on the plans of Antal Szkalnitzky (1836-1878).
The building was named after Mihály Vitéz Csokonai only in 1915. The Csokonai Theater has also had an opera company since 1952. In front of the theater are the busts of the two outstanding directors, Árpád Horváth and Árpád Téri (works by Nándor Berky and Richárd Török).
